Vocaloid is a software developed by the Yamaha Corporation that enables its users to create song lyrics using synthesized human speech. The signal processing part necessary for Vocaloid to function was developed in a joint research project at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain in the year 2000 but wasn't developed and then released as a commercial product until 2004. The popularity of Vocaloid software was moderate at first, but it recieved a massive boom in popularity after Crypton Future Media released Vocaloid 2 in 2007, a successor to the original software that introduced the world to the widely beloved character Hatsune Miku!
Vocaloid music is known for its heavy J-pop influence and for the anime characters associated with vocaloid products. Vocaloid software markets itself alongside certain characters that represent the voices the software synthesizes as a way of making people's relationship to the software feel more personal. The idea is that you won't feel like you're just interacting with a machine, and that having Hatsune Miku, Kasane Teto, Megurine Luka, etc. show up on your screen will humanize the software and make it feel more friendly.
